You could already take the moreish game of Gwent on the go thanks to The Witcher 3's release on Nintendo Switch, but now next-gen consoles and PC are getting a new patch which takes the game's vast world to new graphical heights with the magic of ray-tracing. So exploring every nook and cranny to track down all of the cards for the four main decks just got even more fun.

Most "answers" to this problem give you a list of every card in the game, sorted by faction, and vaguely describing where to find them. Reconciling these lists with your current Gwent deck is a pain thanks to how cards are sorted in the deck menu, and there are so many missable cards that consulting this list at the end of the game can be heartbreaking.

There are three ways to acquire Gwent cards, in addition to those granted to you at the start of the game: purchase them from vendors, win them during quests, and win them during random matches. Let's look at each in turn.

To complete your Gwent collection, you must purchase every card on sale in the Northern Realms. This is the easiest way to collect cards and CD Projekt RED has helpfully patched out an issue with the innkeeper in White Orchard after many players found themselves unable to obtain the Gwent cards there. Check out the merchants by the bridge in White Orchard if you miss the innkeeper.

When shopping for Gwent cards, make sure you exit the vendor's storefront and then pop back in; sometimes you can purchase duplicate cards this way. Having multiple Decoy and Commander's Horn cards can make your life a lot easier when you go after rare cards.

There are several Gwent quests where you'll face better than average opponents, which will reward you with Gwent cards you can't get anywhere else (even though random NPCs use them in their decks). Here's the low down on each of them.

It's possible to miss or fail these quests, or just complete them without playing Gwent - but as of patch 1.05 and later, fail-safes were added for most of the cards you could miss if a character became unavailable. All you need to do to track down the NPC specific card is to select the Gwent quest and follow the waypoint to the card. For example, if your actions cause the Bloody Baron to leave Velen before you win a card from him, you'll find the card in his home.

There is an exception: as noted below, depending on what DLC you have installed you can miss Dandelion and a couple of other cards by failing to win a tournament during the quest A Matter of Life and Death.

The only way to get the Dandelion card, plus some other cards depending on which DLC you have installed, is to be victorious at the three-game tournament optionally playable during secondary quest A Matter of Life and Death.

This secondary quest is available as soon as you arrive in Novigrad, but you need 1,000 crowns to enter and a tournament-ready deck. Save this one for later on, as you'll need the best cards you can find; it's not easy. Warning: This quest is easily failed, so make back up saves.

*Updates to Patch 1.07 / 1.08*: The update of Patch 1.07 seems to have fixed some bugs on receiving Gwent cards from people who may have died or are not accessible in the game anymore, see the CD Project Red Forum. Al tough it broke the achievement/trophy of the Collect Em All Quest. This bug should be fixed with Patch 1.08, so make sure you updated the game. For some players it took some hours after the installation till they received the achievement.

The Blood and Wine expansion introduces a new Gwent deck based on characters and creatures from the Skellige Isles. A starter deck of these cards can be obtained at the beginning of the quest Gwent: To Everything - Turn, Turn, Tournament! from Count Monnier outside the Pheasantry Inn in Beauclair.

This will also unlock the quest Gwent: Never Fear, Skellige's Here, which will pinpoint the loction of merchants, innkeepers and other Gwent enthusiasts in possession of valuable Skellige cards. Below are the locations of the most powerful cards in the Skellige Gwent deck.

Certain cards can only be found by defeating expert Gwent players in a round of cards. Usually they take the form of Hero cards, which are especially useful since they're invulnerable to any weather or special cards. Here are the Hero cards you can win from the tough opponents, as well as some tips for taking them down.

Yennefer's card is one of the best hero cards to pick up, with her Medic ability granting a bonus ressurection to any previously discarded card. This Hero card can be earned by defeating Stjepan the inkeeper in Oxenfurt, once you've gained access to the Novigrad territory. Beating this player will also open up the Gwent: Playing Innkeeps side quest.

Win this rare Hero card from a young boy called Haddy in the village of Midcopse during the quest Gwent: Velen Players. Haddy plays a Northern Realms deck and favors using Close Combat units - many of which have the Tight Bond ability. Counter this with the Biting Frost weather cards, and make use of any Spy cards you have to bolster your hand.

Win this Nilfgaardian Hero card from the Boatwright in Oreton during the Gwent: Velen Players side quest. He plays a powerful Nilfgaard deck, using all three rows equally. His cards are powerful, with few of them boasting a strength below 6, as well as multiple Hero cards, Scorchers and Spy cards.

Other valuable cards can also be won from players marked with a golden Gwent icon (as opposed to the standard white). These players usually appear during the various Gwent-related side quests that you encounter during the game.

This Strength 4 Spy card can be won from the Bloody Baron in Velen. The Baron plays with a well-balanced Northern Realms deck, and favors using Spy cards to gain extra cards for his hand. He also possesses several weather cards and at least one Scorch card, which will wipe your best cards off the table.

Most commonly, you can acquire new cards by purchasing them from various merchants throughout your travels. Many of these merchants are well-versed in the game of Gwent, giving Geralt the opportunity to play and win a card from their deck.

Each round of Gwent, players take turns placing cards until one of them passes. This indicates they are finished placing cards for that round. The other player may place as many additional cards as they wish. Note that you have a finite number of cards, so winning the first round may not be worth wasting all of your remaining deck.
